If you are a Chardonnay lover we feel that we have a pretty good handle on the situation – whether you are looking for something easy to drink and under $10 (I know sounds not possible to find good Chardonnay under $10 doesn’t it) or if you are looking for a special bottle that might be more for those nice dinners and weekend splurges.
2008 Lucky Star Chardonnay
Basically what we have here is a good equation for super affordable wine:
“Super talented and skilled wine maker” + “Knowledge of how to find the best grapes from various vineyards” + “Good fruit” – “Snobbery” = An awesome, lightly oaked Chardonnay that retails for $8.99.
The grapes for this Chard are harvested during the cooler California nights to highlight the crisp taste of the fruit. You get the rich, creaminess of the malolactic fermentation giving this wine that traditional California Chard appeal, but then a touch of Sauvignon Blanc is added to give it an added layer. I personally thought this wine was impressive for it’s $8.99 retail price. I would pair this with a delicious flatbread, roasted chicken, or even with oven roasted pork. At this price you can afford to have a glass with dinner every night!
2008 Cakebread Chardonnay
For those looking for that special bottle, Cakebread Chardonnay has been known to take the cake (excuse the pun)! Previous vintages have received consistent high ratings from our favorite various wine publications (Spectator and Enthusiast) and this new vintage appears to be equally as solid. This is classic Napa Valley Chardonnay and for those that are tried and true lovers of these wines, this is worth every penny! Super layered with flavors – rich flavors of apple and pear, a nice crispness and citrus balance and that classically rich and creamy texture. While the price point is a bit steeper at $43 a bottle, those looking for that truly special bottle of Chardonnay, this is your winner.
